The people of Faith Wesleyan church had a corn boil last night at the parsonage. We happen to be staying with Benjamin so we got to be a part of it. What great fellowship! Everyone pitched in and helped set out the desserts, shuck the corn, get the huge pots filled and boiling, set up chairs and watch the little ones. There was much laughter and fellowship.
After the meal, we all sat around and sang songs. Some of the songs were hymns, some were choruses and some were just silly childhood songs like 'she'll be coming round the mountain when she comes'. A few times I suggested a chorus that they didn't know but instead of us moving on to another song, they were all eager to learn it. They would have me sing it a couple of times until they could catch on to it and then we would sing it together several times after that.
Many times that's how songs and stories have been handed down over the generations. Centuries ago songs and stories would be carried from town to town by a bard or a troubadour. We do much the same thing now. Most people don't read music, they go by memory of a melody and the lyrics. We develop our favourites and we want to share them.
One of the choruses I shared last night was "I'm gonna walk all around that city, where my loved ones have gone on before, I'm gonna sit on the banks of that river, where we'll meet to part no more". And that got me thinking. There is coming a day when all those who have named Jesus Christ as Saviour of their life will be together in Heaven singing praises to Him. I don't think it's too far a stretch to think that just maybe our sing songs there will be like the ones here, only we will have people from every nation, every background sharing their favourites.
Won't it be glorious?! Won't it be wonderful?! Singing praises to the King of Kings, telling the stories of how that little song gave us hope when we were down, helped us to hang on a little while longer. I thank the Lord for the gift of music that He gave to this world. We need to share it and sing praises to Him always.
Psa 92:1 "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:"
