One of my fondest memories of growing up was family supper time. No matter where we were during the day, we would look forward to being together once again, at the end of the day, gathered around the supper table. Dad always sat at one end with Mom at the other with us four kids in the middle.
Supper time was always the time where stories of our day were shared and commented on. We had great discussions on every imaginable subject and everyone was allowed their own opinion, which was usually challenged and discussed all over again.
When the meal was finished, most times we didn't immediately leave the table. Instead we would sit and listen to Dad tell stories of his growing up or of his ancestors. Like Great Uncle Dougie being able to jump Hell's Hole on Blue Island or how he smuggled a 'Greener' over the border across his shoulders under his great coat. There were hundreds of stories and they made supper time oh so special.
When I got married and moved out of my family home, it was supper time that I missed the most. When we had our own family, supper time again became a special time of day for me. Our kids have always made suppertime interesting to say the least. There have been many laughs and story times all over again. We have built memories that will last.
It's sad to hear that people don't use their table but instead eat in front of the TV. (yes, we fall into that trap sometimes too). Conversation ceases when you are not face to face with those you love. When you have to wait for a commercial to speak, sometimes the best things don't get said. Let me encourage you to make a family table, often. You will build memories that you will hold with you all the days of your life.
I agree totally Laurie! We have been in the habit of eating in front of the tv, we are trying to get away from that. It's times like these that I miss and we need to spend as much time as we can with our families...as you well know our children don't stay little for long and these are the times we can never get back. You are a very wise woman and I enjoy reading your blog everyday...you inspire me to be a better wife and mother! Love you!
