Extreme Makeover

I had my first real haircut when I was eight. That's when the 'pixie' cut was popular and my sisters and I all wanted to look like the movie stars and have our hair cut short. All of us had very long hair so Mom asked us if we were sure we wanted to go through with it for several weeks. But we were adament. So without telling my father what we were going to do we went to the hairdresser's salon in Yarmouth, NS where we were living at the time.
Maybe you don't remember what the pixie cut looked like or maybe you are too young to remember. It was very short, cut above the ears, straight across the back and had a bang in front. My sisters and I all have curly hair which is not conducive to a short, straight style and none of us had ever had bangs before. So we had a pretty extreme makeover. We looked completely different and we liked our new style.
We didn't realize how big of a difference our transformation was until we saw Dad walking home from work and he walked right past us! He didn't know us at all! We all had a pretty good laugh at that and he told us we looked cute.
Since that time I have dyed my hair, cut it, permed it, layered it, straightened it and have done all kinds of things to it. I have lost weight, gained weight and changed my appearance over and over again. We have all seen the Jenny Craig commercials where people have lost a great amount of weight and supposedly changed their life. We have seen the 'Extreme Makeover' TV shows and the 'What Not to Wear' programs where they take an ugly duckling and transform her into a beauty queen. We live in a world where appearance seems to be everything and sadly we buy into that mind set.
1Samuel 16:7 says: "But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." Knowing this, it is more important that we take care of the condition of our heart rather than being caught up in the world's race to be the richest, most beautiful, most glamourous or most famous. Everywhere we look we are bombarded with commercials and ads promoting beauty products because 'man looks at the outward appearance'.
We need to please God above everyone else. He is not impressed with the latest hairstyle or make up technique. He IS impressed with a pure heart. The psalmist David's prayer was one that we would all do well to copy. Psalm 51:10 "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." We can change our appearance but if our heart remains the same we have not had a true makeover. We can have an extreme makeover when we turn our hearts over to God and ask Him to create a new heart for us. A heart that follows after Him.
"Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the LORD will be greatly praised." Proverbs 31:30 God bless!
