Isaiah 49:15-16 says: " Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands..."
I love my children so very much. Each one is a special part of me. I carried them in my body, I nursed them at my breast, they are quite literally a part of me. I often say that Benjamin is my heart, Matthew is my joy and Alannah is my love. These are just special ways that I speak of my attachment to my children. I cannot even imagine forgetting them and this verse asks the question: can a mother forget the baby at her breast? No, a mother can't, but even if she could forget that precious life that is so intricately entwined with hers, the Lord would never forget any of us.
It would seem to be an impossible thing for a mother to forget her child, and it is an impossibility for our Heavenly Father to forget one of His children. He has engraved us on His hands. Those hands that He willingly allowed to be nailed to a cross. Those jagged, torn, bloodied hands were made so because He had not forgotten us. He had not forgotten me.
He knew that I had sin that needed to be paid for and He didn't forget me. He knew that I was lost. He knew that there was no way for me to be reconciled to the Father unless there was payment made for my sin. And out of His great love for me, He was willing to pay that price.
His hands are a testament of His love for us, His children. He has promised never to forget us. Our names are written on His hands. As a mother I know that I could never forget one of my children and I believe that is why the Lord compares the deep love a mother has for her children with the unfailing love our Lord has for His children.
Be encouraged those of you who are discouraged, those of you who feel that the Lord is so very far way. He has not and will not forget you. You are engraved on His hands. God bless.
