Somewhere in Time

My husband and I had our first date on Oct 13th, 1980. We went to the old Capitol Theatre in Moncton, N.B. to see the movie Somewhere in Time. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour were the stars and it was a beautiful love story. A perfect movie for a first date. The Capitol Theatre was one of the old style theatres with a gilded ceiling and cherubs carved in the woodwork. It was a beautiful setting and a wonderful movie. If you haven't seen it, it's worth trying to find.

Not to give too much of the story away I will give you a brief outline to whet your appetite. Christopher Reeve plays a playwright who goes to a resort to get-away-from-it-all. The resort's hayday, of the late 1800's has long since past but the elegance of that bygone era is still there. While he is wandering through the lobby of the hotel, a picture of a lovely young woman (Jane Seymour) catches his eye. He is mesmerized by the look in her eyes. He falls in love and must know more about her. He starts researching and asking questions until he finds out her name and that she had been a famous actress of her day. He finds a way to travel back in time to be with her.

She eventually falls in love with him too and to those of us who enjoy a happy ending I thought this would be the perfect place to end the movie. But I didn't write the movie and the writer was much better at telling a story than I am. Through a terrible but simple event, Christopher Reeve is brought back in time and leaves his true love back in the 1800's. He spends the rest of his days trying to get back to her once again.

I have never forgotten that movie. It was a wonderful story and I was in a beautiful setting with a great young man who wanted to be my date. It was a perfect evening. I married that young man in 1985 and our life of adventure began. He has never complained about watching 'sappy' love stories with me. He loves a romantic date night. He has been known to cry over the same things that bring me to tears. And I believe that no matter what era we had been born in, we would have found each other and loved each other. We were meant to be together somewhere in time.
