Be Good To Each Other

Every day in our world we can hear hurtful remarks that people say about each other. Words that tear people down; that malign their character or make fun of the person in question. Sometimes the remarks are made out of jealousy, sometimes out of anger and unfortunately, sometimes they are a deliberate attempt to change someone's opinion, in a negative way, about the person being spoken about.

James 3:6 tells us how dangerous the tongue, (our words), actually are: " The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell." We not only hurt others when we speak against them but we hurt ourselves in the process. James tells us that it will set the course of one's life on fire!

While gossiping and using our words to harm another are terrible things to do, I think the saddest thing we can do with our words is to tear down our spouse. How many times have I been in a company of women and heard them say nothing good about their husbands? He can't do this right. He never does that. He's always doing this. You get my point. I've heard husbands do the same towards their wives too. It's a sad state of affairs when we start to tear down our spouses at all, let alone doing it publicly.

Proverbs 31:12 tells us this about a wife: "She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life." I believe we can apply that to husbands as well and say He brings her good, not harm all the days of his life. This should be our goal towards all people but especially towards our spouses and especially if we are Christians. James 1:26 says: "If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless."

It should be our goal to be good  to each other at all times. I love the section of the famous 'love' chapter of 1 Corinthians 13 in verse 7 that says that love "always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." Did you catch that? Love always protects. When we love someone only good should come out of our mouth about them. When we love someone we should always protect them from our mouth too.

Whether it be a fellow Christian we are speaking about or our mate, our words should always be for good and not harm towards them. God is going to judge us all for every idle word that we speak (Matthew 12:36) so we should be careful with what we say. We need to be like the psalmist David when he said in Psalm 19:14 "may the words of my mouth.....be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord."
