The Dishes Can Wait

Instead of washing dishes after lunch today I went to the beach with Matthew and Alannah and Alannah's Cocker Spaniel, Lilly Rose. It was a perfect time to go, the tide was just right, and the water was so clear! It was beautiful! We had the beach to ourselves and Lilly Rose loved it because there were hardly any waves, just really small ones which she could easily jump. She would swim out deeper than she has ever gone before and when she saw a wave coming she would turn towards shore and ride the wave back in to the beach. It was a wonderful break on a very hot day which I could have missed had I insisted on doing my dishes.

I wonder how many wonderful opportunities we let pass by because we are stuck in a routine. We can travel the same road, every day, to and from work and never actually see the scenery around us. We can get in a rut of doing the same thing, every day, at the same time and life passes us by. Instead of having a rich, vibrant life we can wind up living a life of monotony. This is not the type of life the Lord intends for us, His children. He has promised that we would have life and life more abundantly (John 10:10).

A friend of mine recently shared this quote with me and I wanted to share it with you because it says what I am trying to say:

"Take wrong turns. Talk to strangers. Open unmarked doors. And if you see a group of people in a field, go find out what they are doing. Do things without always knowing how they’ll turn out. You’re curious and smart and bored, and all you see is the choice between working hard and slacking off. There are so many adventures that you miss because you’re waiting to think of a plan. To find them, look for tiny interesting choices. And remember that you are always making up the future as you go."
—Randall Munroe

So do something unexpected today. Do something out of the ordinary. Live your life! Explore! Laugh! Let the dishes wait.
