Even In The Whisper

11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 1 Kings 19:11-12

This is one of my favourite portions of Scripture. It reminds me that God isn't always where we expect Him to be. When we think of Almighty God we automatically think of His amazing power. We think of the strength of the wind and His ability to shake the earth and thunders and lightening. But rarely, if ever, do we think of God as being quiet as a whisper.

The prophet Elijah was discouraged. Jezebel was hunting him down. She had already killed all of the other prophets of God and he was the only one left. Sometimes we can feel like we are the only ones still standing for what is right. We feel alone and tired and discouraged. We've done everything we can and we don't see any hope of help on the horizon.

God heard Elijah and furthermore He saw his distress. God told him to come into His presence. That's where we have to go when we need refueling and encouragement. When we are 'tired in well doing' we need to sit at the Master's feet. Only God can speak to our soul and give us the comfort and help that we need. Sometimes we seek help from so many other sources but God says to come to Him 'all ye who are heavy laden and I will give you rest.'

God gave Elijah detailed instructions of what He wanted him to do. And one of the things He told him was to go and find Elisha and that Elisha would be his servant. God sent help to Elijah. He gave him a friend and a companion when he needed it most. God wanted him to know that he wasn't alone.

Are you listening to the whisper of God? Are you waiting for His quiet voice? We need to quiet our spirit and wait for God to speak and He will. Seek His face and wait for His voice. You are never alone. You may not feel like He is there but He is right beside you whispering to you and encouraging you. Listen for Him because He is there even in the whisper.
