Psalm 91 is my favourite Psalm. It was my Nanny Stewart's favourite one too. My pastor, at the time, read it to me after I had given birth to Benjamin. It has held me up and encouraged me all my life. It has been a life line and causes me to take a step back and let God have His way in my life. Here are those beautiful words of the first few verses:
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High ...will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [a]
2 I will say [b] of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.
The psalm begins right away with a promise: if you stay close to God, you will find rest. It goes on to say that He will give you protection, He will rescue you and you never have to be afraid. Life's battles may be surrounding you but the battle will not come to you. You will be sheltered and protected. I love verse 8 when it says that you will only see the punishment of the wicked. As a child of God that punishment is not for you!
What a promise!
Let's continue reading this beautiful psalm:
9 If you make the Most High your dwelling— even the LORD, who is my refuge-
10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."
Again we are told that if we choose to live our lives for God, then 'no harm will befall' us. We will be guarded by the very angels of Heaven because of verse 14: because the Lord has promised to rescue us because we love Him and we acknowlege His name.
The psalm ends with another beautiful promise: the promise of long life and we will be saved! God is so good! Why wouldn't people want to serve Him and give their lives over to Him? Maybe it's because they don't know these beautiful promises that are found in His Word, His love letter to mankind, His creation.
Someone once said that there are 30,000 promises found in the Word of God. I don't know because I haven't counted them, but I do know this one thing for sure: God loves His children and He will honor every promise! He is faithful and true.
