For the past couple of weeks we have had evidence that we have a varmint of some type roaming the church when no one is there. We first made this discovery when we were preparing for our annual women's conference and we packed our welcome bags for the conference attendees. Each bag had among other things, a beautiful piece of home made fudge. We packed the bags one night and the next morning found the bottom of one bag chewed through and the fudge missing. I was not happy.
We finally decided that we had to set traps. I kept hoping it wasn't a squirrel, I would hate to kill a squirrel but once they cross over into my territory, well the gloves are off and it's war. Tonight we had a visting evangelist come to the church. He was a singer, a ventriloquist and an illusionist who gave a gospel message. We had a huge turnout of 97 people and he was well received. He had requested that we not have supper for him until after the service, so we had decided to serve him and his wife in the fellowship room.
While their bus was being loaded, following the service, a couple of the men of the church went downstairs to set the traps for whatever varmint we had. The men left and maybe three minutes later we heard a snap! Sure enough we had got a rat! An ugly, scary rat! As the evangelist was coming down the steps, the men were removing the rat and resetting the trap. Needless to say we were doing some scrabbling to get everything done before he discovered what we were doing. The trap was reset and everything was cleaned up and I served the supper that I had prepared at home and brought to the church.
While we were sitting enjoying the fellowship, Matthew heard another snap. He disappeared into the kitchen and removes another rat from the same trap! Good grief! Can you just imagine having company visiting your church and you want so badly to make a good impression and here you are killing rats??? Not what I signed up for when I went into ministry. ha! ha! ha!
We have a good man in our church who has taken on the gruesome task of checking the traps daily, Lord bless him! It got me to thinking about the tasks that we all have to do sometimes that maybe we don't enjoy but they still have to be done. There's no avoiding them, they have to be done. But I believe that God gives us the strength we need to accomplish what we need to.
"And he said unto me, my grace is
sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect
in weakness."--2 Cor. 12:9.
I hope we have seen the last of our varmints but even if we have I know that there will always be unpleasant tasks that we have to do and God will help us face them and overcome them.
