The Words of a Friend

I received a phone call today from a friend who calls every now and then to encourage me. She builds me up with her words. They're not vain flattery, nor is she trying to curry favour. No, she is just doing what the Lord has laid on her heart to do: to take time out of her day to encourage her pastor's wife. She is using her words for good. She isn't tearing down or complaining or being negative. She is not adding a burden or causing strife. She is taking what she has, her time and her words, and using them for the Lord. What a blessing she is! She has an open heart that is willing to be taught. She wants to grow in the Lord and follow His ways! Oh that we all would have a heart like that!

It should be our desire to be more like Christ every day and that doesn't only apply to our actions but to our words as well. We need to take every opportunity to speak life and encouragement to those we come in contact with. That doesn't mean we need to adopt a 'polly anna' persona. We still need to be realistic but I believe we need to look for every opportunity to build one another up and lighten someone else's burden. Sometimes that's as easy as taking five minutes out of our busy schedule to give someone a call or to send a card in the mail or even to encourage someone via Facebook.

There are many ways that we can encourage one another and I believe that when we do we please the heart of God. Look for the opportunities the Lord will give you to do His work and speak encouragement to those around you.

Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; so does the sweetness of a friend's counsel that comes from the heart. Proverbs 27: 9
