The Walls are Closing In

"When hard pressed, I cried to the LORD; he brought me into a spacious place. The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?"

(Psalm 118:5-6)

Have you ever been at that point when everything seems to be going wrong around you and in your life? You're 'hard pressed', as the psalmist is saying here? You don't know which way to turn because it seems like the walls are closing in on you? I think we all have been at one point or another in our lives. But in this verse the psalmist gives us the key to get out of that claustrophobic situation: cry out to the Lord.

Christ is our Redeemer, our Saviour, our Rescuer. When we cry out to Him, He pushes back those walls and brings us into a spacious place, a place where we can breathe again and most importantly gain perspective. It's hard to have perspective about our problems when we are surrounded by them, sometimes we need to step back from them to look at them properly. When the psalmist stepped back from his and spent time with the Lord, he realized that the Lord was with him and he didn't need to be afraid. He even gets so bold as to say "what can mere mortals do to me?"

When we realize that God is eager and anxious to help us we will turn to Him more often. When we realize that we are His child whom He loves, we will turn to Him. And I believe that when we realize who we are in Christ and Who is on our side, we will not only turn to Him in times of trouble but will turn to Him willingly when things are going well just because we want to be with Him. Then we can truly say that He is my beloved and I am His.

If you feel like the walls are closing in around you and there is no way out, let me assure you that there is. Call on the Lord and He will deliver you. He is waiting for you to ask Him for His help. He will hear your cry and take you to that spacious place where you can breathe easy once more. God bless.
