Wisdom

Why is it that we have to live life, survive tragedies, lose loves, get gray hair and have more years behind us than before us to be wise? What is wisdom? It's not just being smart, but knowing what to do with the knowledge you possess. When God made Solomon His king over all Israel, God made quite the offer to him. 1 Kings 3 says this:

"That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”

Solomon replied, “You showed faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued your faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne.

“Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”

10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. 11 So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies— 12 I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!

13 And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! 14 And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.”

15 Then Solomon woke up and realized it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem and stood before the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, where he sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then he invited all his officials to a great banquet."

This portion of Scripture reminds me of another. Matthew 6:33 says: "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need". I have found this true in my own life. When I place God in His rightful spot in my life, first above all else, He blesses me with everything else that I need and rightly desire. He has given me a beautiful family: a husband who loves me and still treats me as his sweetheart, children who have grown up into adults whom I like being around. Our children follow the Lord and both of our sons have married wonderful girls who love the Lord too. I am content.

I believe Matthew 6:33, when we apply it to our life, is the beginning of wisdom. A lot of people know the Word. Some can even recite part of it. But that's just being smart. To have wisdom you must apply what you know about the Word. You need to live it.

I came across this article by Regina Brett. She is not 90 yrs old as some have thought, but I believe she already has wisdom and has shared it with the world in this article. You will see the clues of where her wisdom began in numbers 8, 15 and 34. When we recognize who God is and who we are in relation to Him, we gain wisdom. I hope you enjoy this article as much as I did. God bless.

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most requested column I've ever written.

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

family will.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Stay true to yourself.

7... Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
