What About Tomorrow?

It is a beautiful winter day today. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and the snow is sparkling like diamonds. Yes, it is a beautiful day. You'd never guess that we are suppose to get a bad winter storm over the next two days. The weather man is saying we'll have at least 20-30 cm of snowfall before this particular storm is over. But you'd never guess that it could be true by looking out  the window today. Today, the weather is beautiful.

I was reminded of the story of the rich man who thought he had all the time in the world:
Luke 12: 15-21

15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

None of us know what tomorrow will bring, not even the weather man. How many times has the weather forecast been one of doom and gloom only to have the storm pass us by? Many, many times. We make our plans as if we have all the time in the world. We are encouraged by the society in which we live to have a five year and ten year plan. We are living, physically, in the present but emotionally in the future. God wants us to "choose this day whom you will serve" (Joshua 24:15). He reminds us to make this day count for Him. To live this day to the best of our abilities and to focus on it because we are not promised tomorrow.

James 4: 13- 15 tells us:
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapour that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”

Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.

Not one of us knows how much time we have to live on this earth. We can take care of our physical bodies to the point of extreme exercising and food consumption. We can count calories and fat content. We can strictly monitor everything that we eat and do in an attempt to add years onto our live expectancy, but truth be told our days are numbered and have been since we were conceived in the womb.

The length of our days is seventy years--or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away (Psalm 90:10)

...it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27)

...a time to be born and a time to die, (Ecclesiastes 3:2)

Therefore, since all of us, have a limited number of days we need to make every day count. We can't put off doing what we know God wants us to do. Some people have a 'bucket list' of things they want to do before they die. It's a 'some day' list. 'I'll get around to it some day'. Today is the day because we don't know if we will have a 'some day'. So go over your list and see what you've been putting off. Prioritize your list. What is the most important item on that list? Do that first because we don't know what tomorrow will bring.

Over the years I have heard many people tell me that they don't want to give their heart and life over to God yet, they want to wait until they're old, maybe even make a death bed confession. That's just reckless thinking. None of us know if we will even have time on our death bed to make things right with the Lord. We don't know if we'll be conscious and able to make that choice. Today is the day. We can't put off making the decision to serve Christ because it is the most important decision you will ever make. That one decision will determine where you will spend eternity. No matter how old you live to be, it will still be a drop in the bucket of time compared with eternity. The choice is yours. You don't know if you will have tomorrow, none of us do, so please don't put off making the most important decision of your life until tomorrow. God bless.
